If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above then do your bike and yourself a favour and get a flash tune. Ive found out that PC5 is an intermediate tool between the engine and ECU, if you dont want to tune it very often, you can go for ecu flash and load the map directly in there. Most likely needs to be sent away and loaded with a map. ECU flashes on modern day bikes don’t just give you more power, they make the bike a lot more friendly to ride. More air means a bigger bang, which means more power, doesn’t it? Not exactly. I keep hearing about getting ECU tuned after replacing stock exhaust with aftermarkets. It would have been So Cool if these Vmax 1700s had come stock with the 3 level adjustable power, wouldnt need the flash. Technically Yamaha says the stock tune can handle a full Acropovic exhaust (although I would certainly expect to tune with a full exhaust). Hard really to describe the power delivery on it. Of course with a full exhaust and no DBK there may be more noticeable ill effects. This is due to strict EPA laws in which limit the manufactures to. While changing these parameters we can improve performance, reliability, and often times unlock any restrictions set by the ECU. I'm sure if you wired it open, it would make a lot more noise and not pass the strict EC/ECE/CARB RP/EPA standards that it claims to meet. A slip-on is mostly just changing the sound, it wont make a big-enough difference to airflow that you need a custom tune to handle it. But your bike will never be running right. Flashing an ECU is to make a hard change within the stock parameters, unlike a piggyback system which merely tricks the ECU into the changes you make. The cool thing seems to be the mechanical exhaust damper/valve. It hints at what I would expect from a "performance" sound. The level does not seem louder but the Akra has a crisper/sharper bite to the note and there is mild/minor burbling down low. Scroll down about half way for sound bytes.
